Has your get up and go, got up and gone??!!

The above statement applies to so many of us when it comes to training! Even me!

There are days when we will have zero motivation and the thought of the gym is just gut wrenching, but have you ever thought you’re not enjoying exercising because you’re doing the wrong type of exercise?

Hear me out …

So when you exercise you release happy endorphins, this happens to all of us, so there is no escaping it. However, getting to these happy endorphins means you have to exercise and I find that a lot of people lack motivation because they don’t enjoy the exercise they do.

The gym isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, neither is weight lifting or running a marathon, but there are so many different types of exercise that you hopefully will find one that you enjoy.

I bet from the list below you can pick at least one form of exercise that you enjoy that isn’t the gym;

  • Taking the dog for a long walk
  • Playing squash
  • Swimming
  • Cycling
  • Kick Boxing
  • Yoga
  • Dancing
  • Hoola Hooping!

Yes, doing at least one of the above is a good form of exercise and they’re enjoyable. You don’t have to make working out the bain of your life, realistically if you don’t enjoy it then you’re not going to put as much effort in and you won’t get your desired results.

Do what makes you happy!

What type of exercising does everyone enjoy?

It’s Hot Hot Hot!

So guys, if you’re from Britain you will be feeling how I am with the heat right now, if not then let me tell you guys, it is DAM Hot!

Normally a British summer is around 20 degrees, we’ve been hitting 30 degrees for the last month and I’ll be honest it is melting me.

Now everyone is hot, but try being near on 5 months pregnant, it is not nice. And people keep saying to me ” I know how you feel, I was pregnant through summer”, no honey, you don’t know how it feels, like I said a normal British summer is 20 degrees, this is like being abroad, but without the pool and wearing more clothing!

Now due to the heat and wanting to carry on exercising, my water intake has gone up to 4 litres a day, yes 4!!

Now before you question me, I’ve already asked my midwife and she said it is more than fine and in fact it will be helping the baby. At one point I did think, dear lord am I going to end up drowning my little bundle, but I can safely say I won’t.

But pregnancy aside, there are huge benefits from drinking 2+ litres of water a day and why I would encourage you to do so.

Check these out;

  • Increases Brain Power and Provides Energy – No, you may not become Albert Einstein however your brain power will increase.
  • Promotes Healthy Weight Management and Weight Loss – yes water helps you lose weight!
  • Flush Out Toxins –  remember your body is a temple, why not flush out the bad
  • Improves Your Complexion – Your skin will love you for drinking more water and you’ll notice that glow will come back
  • Boosts Immune System – Yep, by drinking more water your immune system will actually improve and prevent as much illness.
  • Prevents Headaches – these pesky little things are awful but by drinking more water you will see the reduction of headaches.

water

You need to ensure you stay hydrated. Your body is made up of 60% water and when you exercise you will need to give your body back the water that it has just sweated out.

Now you may think drinking 2 litres/8 glasses of water a day is impossible, but look at it this way, 8 pints of beer when your out on the lash is easy right? So make it a priority to drink the water your body NEEDS. You chose to drink beer, it is not needed but you do it because you enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy water, as I know it’s not an overly exciting drink, then add some juice into it or lemons. You can add your own twist but it is so essential that you do drink enough.

You will at first notice that you are visiting the loo more than a pregnant lady however this will eventually subside when your body becomes used to the increased amount of water your are inputting. Stick with it.

Your body will thank you for it!

If you have any questions about your water intake then ask away.

Going to the gym but can’t get slim?

Ever wondered why you’re going to the gym but not losing weight?

It’s a common misconception that by going to the gym you can eat whatever you want as you are exercising, the truth of the matter is this is not the case. The other misconception is that if you do lots and lots of cardio you are going to lose weight and tone up, again this isn’t always the case.

The truth is we all have different body types, my partner for example can eat whatever he likes and as long as he is training, won’t gain a pound. Frustrating, I know! Me on the other hand, if I look at a doughnut my ass gets a second ass!

Now when I first started training years ago I made the very mistake of thinking that as long as I am working out then my body will naturally go to the shape I wanted it to be. Then I found out about body types.

So the three main body types are Ectomorph, Endomorph and Mesomorph each being totally different from the other.

Ectomorph: Lean and long, with difficulty building muscle. This is usually the type of person that may find it hard to gain weight and tone muscle. This body type will burn off fat very easily and so to gain muscle you will need to cut your cardio down and concentrate on compact workouts, you’re also going to have to up your food intake, especially carbs and protein.

Endomorph: Big, high body fat, often pear-shaped, with a high tendency to store body fat. If you fall into this category then I’m sorry to tell you that you’re going to find it easier to store fat than you are to shift it, but not all is lost. If you up your cardio workouts using LISS and HIIT routines such as short, fast hill sprints then the weight will begin to shift along will a lower calorie intake concentrating on ensuring it is high in fibre.

Mesomorph: Muscular and well-built, with a high metabolism and responsive muscle cells. If this is your body type them you lucky dam sod! You can look like a Greek god/goddess without having to worry too much! This body type is especially lucky with training as you can keep balanced workouts and keep progressing. You can keep your calorie intake to a standard portion of around 1500 for a woman, but be careful not to eat too many fatty treats, your body might be that of an Adonis but you still need to take care of your heart and cholesterol.

So before starting your training, you need to find out what body type you are as you don’t want to be spending all that time in the gym and it does nothing for you. If you’re unsure which body type you are then there are plenty of tests/quizzes you can take online.

Keep active and stay healthy

Until next time folks 🙂

Stereotype – how can you be beautiful if you’re anything but perfect?

URGHH straight away this title gets my back up. We are surrounded by stereotypes, we have to look a certain way to be beautiful, have a certain body shape to be hot and dress a certain way to be noticed… erm NO!!!

what the actual F!

Unfortunately the media today has us living in a world where so many of us believe that this is true. I mean if you don’t look a little bit like kin Kardashian or follow her every move then are you even worthwhile??

It literally drains me how women feel they have to inject their faces with crap, slap a ton of make up on, have fake hair, fake eyelashes and fake nails to even come close to feeling beautiful.

Ladies, each and every one of you is beautiful in your own unique way. Why on earth do you want to look like these people.

It saddens me greatly that this is how women feel they need to look. We all have our insecurities but the vast majority of them come from the media and social media.

Are you really under the illusion that these women really look like this? Have you never heard of Photoshop?

I remember an article came out a while back showing 2 pictures of Kim Kardashians ass, one was photoshopped to death, the other wasn’t. Guess what … the woman had cellulite just like everyone else, her bum wasn’t perfectly round, it had dimples in it, because that was the real truth. Not some made up photo that we are meant to believe and eventually fantasize about looking like.

You are perfect because you are you. You should be proud of who you are.

I want to promote body confidence amongst women, if you want to lose weight, then do it for you, not because you feel that the only way you will be noticed is if you’re a twig, likewise if you want to dye your hair, do it for you.

If you take one thing away from this post please let it be this

.. BE YOU.

Chunky but funky

So I’ve not posted in my blog for so long mainly because I’ve had a tough time with pregnancy and work but I’m finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel!

My second trimester saw a whirlwind of shit with work. I found out I was getting made redundant 😥 you can imagine right! The sheer terror was awful

How am I going to live?

How am I going to feed the baby?

I’m going to be an unemployed mum!!!

Seriously the list went on and on and eventually I made myself Ill with worry, but after numerous break downs, conversations with my partner, family and friends I finally managed to figure out my next move and realise that all was not lost.

I’m lucky, I have a fantastic partner and family that would support me through anything but still it was hard.

Anyway I’ve now entered my third trimester, so I’m on the home stretch and one thing I have learnt is that weight gain is inevitable.

Yes, unfortunately ladies, unless you have a personal trainer and chef on hand you are going to gain that weight that you were so desperate not to. Now although this grieves me in a way I can’t explain I’ve come to terms with it as I haven’t given up training. Just because I am gaining weight doesn’t mean I have to stop training. In fact I have been training really hard and I’ve loved it.

I swim 3 times a week and I do 2-3 home workouts a week and I feel better for it.

Guys I know how off putting it is when you step on the scales and see that they either haven’t gone down or, if like me you’re pregnant, the scales gave gone up, but please DONT GIVE UP.

Always remember that muscle weighs more than fat and it’s not about what the scales say, it’s about how you feel.

I may have gained 30lbs with this pregnancy but I feel great and I know that once madam pops out I will pop back into shape.

Hang in there ladies, keep going and encourage eachother.

It’s hard but what’s worth it won’t be easy and what’s easy won’t be worth it.

The struggle is real

Well I have got to be honest exercising in this heat seems unbearable sometimes, especially when you really just want to sit in a bucket of ice!

That aside, the other thing I have been struggling with lately is the weight I have gained. Now unfortunately it is inevitable that when having a baby you are going to gain weight, and if I am being totally honest it is something I have struggled with.

You see I’m one of these people that because of the exercise I do, I very rarely gain weight, that is unless I decide to have a complete fat week and eat the entire domino’s chain! But it’s not often. Now I am having to accept the fact that my body is changing and no matter how much exercise I do, I am going to gain baby weight. And do you know what ladies … IT SUCKS. It’s hard realising that the little ass you used to have now is a huge thing that needs its own postcode, or the size 10 shorts I used to wear now laugh at me when I look at them. And the hair bobble trick is now fully in use! yes I am using hair bobbles to buckle my pants together.

The struggle is real!!!

All of the above are happening to my once toned body and I am struggling to accept that this is what happens when you have a child! So if people say to you, I only gained 10lbs then good for them, but everyone is different and we have to accept that. Listen to me hey, I really need to practice what I preach on this one but I do know that even though I may have gained weight, I will have a lovely healthy baby and my body will find it easier to snap back into shape once I have given birth.

So, ladies, my beautiful women, I assure you, if you feel that you are going it alone and gaining unwanted weight during pregnancy then I am with you!

The main thing is carry on with your healthy eating and exercising and try and accept that your body will change and them unwanted pounds will creep on but it is not forever!

Let me know how you’ve been getting on with your pregnancy and weight gain

Rest days! Don’t deny yourself

Hey there fellow bloggers,

I have to send my apologies as I haven’t posted anything for a while due to being unwell. Last week I hit exhaustion and had to visit the doctor, now normally I wouldn’t bother but being pregnant I thought I probably should go and get checked out. Anyway cut a long story short, the doctor told me that I do too much and with working 2 jobs my body was exhausted. I did ask the doctor about the amount of exercise I am doing and whether that would have an effect and although she said I needed to make sure I was giving my body the sufficient time to rest, she also said that exercise would only have positive benefits!!!!!!!

So last week I decided to take it easy, I had a week off the gym but still couldn’t fully rest as I am not wired like that! I have to be doing something, sitting at home all day “putting my feet up” gives me cabin fever. So I walked! I ended up walking 35 miles over the week and by the end of the week I felt better rested than I had in a long time.

The point of this post is to ensure you that having a rest day is ok and I would encourage it. Without resting, your muscles don’t have the time they need to recover, repair and get stronger. Also you need to rest so you can fully enjoy your workouts, if you are constantly exhausted from working out then you’re not going to work as hard, because you don’t have the energy, and it’s going to become a chore for you to do it rather than something you enjoy.

Resting doesn’t have to mean sitting on your ass and stuffing your face with cake! No, resting can mean taking a day off from the gym or running but still going on a long stroll. Your body will tell you when it needs time to rest and you need to LISTEN to it, otherwise you will burn yourself out.

Ever heard of the expression “you can’t burn the candle at both ends”, yeah well this also applies to working out. Be careful not to over do it, you’ll do yourself more harm than good if you don’t rest!

In the words of Beyonce “LISTEN”, you’re body loves you, love it back.

Take care guys

You can sit on the couch or get rid of the pouch!

So yesterday I felt really unwell, I mean sick, headaches and generally exhausted but I really didn’t want to get home from work and just sit on the couch as I know it would have made me worse! Now not everyone is the same, so please don’t think that just because I’m a fitness junkie, you have to be the same, you don’t and if you’re pregnant and having a hard time then it’s understandable that fitness may make you want to vom! But I promise, from experience that fresh air and gentle exercise will help! You can up the ante once you start feeling better.

So instead I decided to go for a walk with a friend, it wasn’t a power walk or anything too strenuous but it was still exercise and I wasn’t sat there stuffing my face and afterwards I felt 100% better!

So, you see, exercising doesn’t always have to be vigorous and 100 miles an hour, you can still burn calories as long as you are being active in some kind of way. Burning yourself out by doing extreme exercise everyday won’t help you in the long run as eventually your body will have to rest, and yes rest is good for you!

By resting, you allow your muscles the time they need to recover and believe me they need time. By giving them this rest period they will then be able to train just as hard the next time you use them.

If, like me, you are addicted to being active and find it physically impossible to sit still (my partner thinks I have ants in my pants) then rather than killing yourself working out hard 24/7 think about doing some less strenuous exercising like walking or swimming, play with the kids or go on the trampoline for a little while. Whatever you are doing on your feet is better than sitting on your bum!

Remember keeping fit and healthy is important but part of this is looking after yourself at the same time. Don’t over exert yourself too much.

I hope that my posts are a good read for you guys, if there is anything you want me to talk about or want advice with then let me know 🙂
